Title: STUDENT ASSISTANT -ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURAL SCIENCES-
Salary: $11.55 - $17.80
This is a Limited Term Intermittent position and may work at a maximum of 1500 hours per calendar year. The Compression-Ignition and Heavy-Duty Certification (CIHD) Section is responsible for the certification for new off-road engines and on-road engines and vehicles produced for sale in California. Specifically, this section is responsible for reviewing manufacturers' applications for certification for off-road and on-road diesel engines and on-road heavy-duty gasoline engines and vehicles.
This position is responsible for assisting technical staff in the CIHD program performing paraprofessional duties. The successful candidate will work part-time, participating in various phases of the certification process including reviewing and approving Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle, 100 Engine Exemption and Fuel-Fired Heater application requests. Additional responsibilities include updating and maintaining certification databases which contain engine specification and emissions test data for off-road engines and on-road heavy-duty engines and vehicles; working with databases, including Microsoft Access and Excel, including programming and analyzing data; screening manufacturer-submitted data files for errors and completeness before entering data into the databases in Microsoft Excel and Access; working closely with certification engineers and management on developing and running queries on the databases; scanning signed ARB Executive Orders into PDF format and posting them on ARB’s web-site for easy access by the public; work with certification engineers to electronically preserve manufacturers’ submitted certification correspondences; and perform any other duties that may be necessary to meet the needs of the section. Student will be in a training capacity and work under close supervision with the Section Manager.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate for this position will be enthusiastic and demonstrate initiative, have excellent written and oral communication skills, have the ability to understand technical and policy issues, have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the demonstrated ability to work effectively with other staff. The candidate will have a working knowledge of basic statistical and mathematical computational techniques; off-road and on-road engine/equipment emissions sources; off-road and on-road engine/equipment air quality regulations; spark-ignited engine/evaporative emissions control systems; must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Access, and document scanning software; ability to analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action; gather, compute, and analyze scientific data; review, check and interpret certification data submitted by manufacturers. The candidate must be able to work in a team setting, have excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work under tight timelines.
