Are you interested in joining an exciting and challenging team researching advanced technology light- and medium-duty vehicle emissions and developing improved emission test procedures? This is an opportunity to perform important emission research of advanced technologies vehicles such as direct injection gasoline vehicles, advanced diesel vehicles, advanced hybrid electric vehicles, and advanced electric vehicles. It is also an opportunity to work with a team developing improved emission test procedures for measuring low-level Particulate Matter (PM) emissions in support of the Advanced Clean Car and Low Emission Vehicle programs. The Engineering Testing and Facility Support Section is seeking a technical expert in vehicle emission testing, particularly in PM measurement. Responsibilities include applying scientific engineering knowledge, skills, and principles for planning, coordinating, directing, reporting of vehicle emission test projects, automotive emission control system evaluations and evaluating advanced emission measurement instrumentation. These studies provide data and analysis to develop future motor vehicle emission standards, emission test procedures and air pollution control strategies. The incumbent is also expected to work hands-on in vehicle emission testing laboratory to install, and operate and evaluate advanced emission measurement instrumentation.
The most competitive candidate will be highly motivated, able to work well independently and with others; have knowledge of the LEV program, vehicle exhaust emission calculations, motor vehicle emission control technologies; have knowledge and experience in chassis dynamometer vehicle emission testing, vehicle emission sampling and testing methods; have the ability to plan, organize, coordinate and direct vehicle emission test projects; have the ability to organize, analyze and report test data; have the knowledge and experience in programming and operating LabView and operating Onboard Diagnostic test equipment. In addition, the incumbent should have knowledge and experience in Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and the ability to work well with technical staff, industry, other public agencies, and the general public. The successful candidate will be a team player; possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills; has excellent written and oral communication skills; has ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously; is detailed oriented; takes initiative; and has excellent time management skills. The strong interest and ability to keep abreast of the latest advances in vehicle technologies, emission controls, emission measurement instrumentation and laboratory methods is expected.

Current state employees who are in the Air Pollution Specialist/Air Resources Engineer classification, are list eligible, or have transfer eligibility. In order to be eligible to transfer, the Minimum Qualifications of the Air Pollution Specialist/Air Resources Engineer classification must be met, including the educational requirements.
