Under the general direction of the Supervising Architect, Design Services, this position takes lead architectural discipline responsibilities for planning the work and developing designs and preparations of plans, specifications, and technical work for complex projects involving construction, modifications, renovation, repair and maintenance of large complex multi-structure facilities on a statewide basis related to the existing institutions, juvenile institutions, conservation and maintenance camps.
41% Manages Architectural/Engineering firms retained by CDCR. Reviews construction documents prepared by retainer consultants of major/minor/special repair capital outlay projects prepared to ensure conformity with departmental construction standards. Participates in development, direction, management and review of project proposals involving all existing facilities statewide utilizing design consultants. Provides technical input to the central office planning staff in defining the project scope. Provides State’s Estimates.
39% As primary architectural discipline resource, develops designs and prepares preliminary and construction plans, specifications for in-house design of a wide variety of renovation and reconstruction related projects in conformance with the applicable codes and Department standards. Investigates reviews and identifies methods of construction for varying complex architectural installations and proposed projects within all the institutions. Serves as consultant and technical advisor to CDCR personnel on architectural standards, interpretation of handicapped accessibility codes and California State Fire Marshal requirements. Activities include, architectural programming, preliminary design recommendations, and ensuring that all security, custodial and code requirements are met. Provides value analysis and recommends solutions to various architectural problems. Reviews Section 6.00, Service Requests, and Branch Assignments of varying complexity. Responds to special and urgent requests to resolve various safety or security design issues using site investigations, laboratory testing, knowledge and codes.
20% Provides construction support, reviews/approves; submittals, change orders, request for information (RFIs), and inspections for various construction projects to ensure conformance with codes. This includes implementing the Testing and Inspection Program when required for Correctional Treatment Center Licensing (CTC). Prepares as-built drawings for all in-plant construction completed by Construction Services.
