Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the general direction of the Data Processing Manager III, Applications and Web Section, the Senior Programmer Analyst (Spec) executes the duties of a database administrator (DBA) for SQL Server and SQLlite environments to support the most complex systems operating in a mobile and web based N-tiered environment, for production/development/test and staging environments. The DBA performs a variety of complex tasks related to system development, maintenance and disaster recovery. The DBA has the responsibility of Lead Technical Architect ensuring that any custom developed or third party applications will co-exist in CalVet’s current environment. Create reports from custom and third party databases. Works independently and has responsibility for the middle tier environment. Documents the technical environment as needed and maintains operations and maintenance procedures as required.


• Provide technical expertise in all aspects of the design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance of Microsoft SQL server databases; creating reports and performing data analysis using SQL Server and SharePoint Business Intelligence.

• Design database schemas using best practices such as normalization, table constraints, stored procedures, and indexes to ensure data integrity and performance quality.

• Support data integration solutions using SQL Server Integration Services.

• Support the middle tier (application servers) and web based servers from a software/operating system perspective.

• Independently coordinates and/or work with a third party vendor as applicable to coordinate database upgrades/patches ensuring all systems continue to operate in an upgraded environment.

• Monitor, manage CalVet’s database environment and stay abreast of emerging database technologies.

• Works with the Network Administrator, Web Master, developers and vendors to diagnose and resolve problems quickly and efficiently. Takes ownership of database problems and resolves to resolution.

• Build and maintain reports using SQL Server Reporting Services.

• Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with business, technical and vendor staff at all levels.

• Ability to function independently within a fast paced IT development team environment with changing priorities.

• Develop and maintain databases in support of native mobile applications.

• Proficiency in MS SQL Server, MS Office Suite, MS Project, Visio, SharePoint, Team Foundation Server.

• Ability to work under pressure and ensure timely completion of projects.

• Willingness to work in a team environment and build from the potential assets of each team member.
