Under the general direction of a Business Taxes Administrator I, the Tax Compliance Specialist independently performs the offsite duties for the district including investigations, public education and identifying tax gap opportunities for the district and the state. The incumbent, while working autonomously, informs the supervisor of complex and/or sensitive issues on assigned cases, public contacts and can act as the lead person in cases leading to criminal prosecution on fraudulent and illegal operations. The incumbent acts as an expert resource person for both compliance and audit in all areas of tax administration from a field perspective, supports and works with the collection staff on complex or sensitive cases and identifies by virtual of public contacts any areas of non-compliance that may be unique to district or regional boundaries. Travel is required up to 20% of the time, including overnight and out-of-state travel. This position requires the incumbent to be fingerprinted. Meeting the training requirements for this position may require overnight travel for up to five consecutive nights. Interested candidate must meet the educational requirements. 1) Describe an experience where you acted as a lead person during a difficult project or situation. What was the result of your involvement?
2) Provide an example that highlights your analytical abilities when attempting to locate or obtain compliance from a taxpayer.
3) Describe an experience where you had to review financial documents (bank statements, purchase journals, income tax returns, purchase invoices, etc.) to determine whether or not a tax was owed.
4) What are the similarities between sales and use tax? What are the differences?
