Under direction of the Supervising Integrated Waste Management Specialist I, the incumbent will have the opportunity to travel throughout the State of California to establish working relationships and provide technical assistance to jurisdictions, businesses, and state agencies. The Local Assistance and Market Development (LAMD) Branch offers a diversity of assignments and experience working in the solid waste field. LAMD is a dynamic team environment with flexible work schedules (Telework and Alternate Work Week Schedules). In addition, the incumbent will work with the latest and greatest technology to apply scientific methods and principles in the performance and management of assigned tasks listed below. Utilizing a holistic approach, LAMD staff are the Department’s field representatives (frontline staff) delivering services and programs locally and regionally to increase proper handling of waste (including household hazardous waste); waste reduction, diversion, and procurement; and development of local and regional markets. Staff on the frontline takes an integrated, comprehensive, and market based approach to local assistance. As the Department’s field representative, LAMD staff assists regions in developing and/or expanding local and regional markets, providing guidance on local and state agency diversion and procurement programs, implementing comprehensive recycling communities, and helping businesses become more sustainable. LAMD provides a supportive and collaborative working environment with a focus on team work. This position involves travel throughout the state approximately 20% of the time.
Enjoys solving problems and working with numbers and databases; project management skills and experience; working knowledge of waste management practices and issues facing local governments; strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex issues in simple language; and extensive experience with computers, spreadsheets, and databases.
