DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Staff Services Manager I in the Training, Education, and Administrative Management Unit (TEAMU) of the Nutrition Services Division (NSD), the Child Nutrition Consultant (CNC) provides Technical Assistance (TA) to School Food Authorities (SFA) as they prepare applications for the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) initiative, a voluntary program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The CNC will assist the lead HUSSC Nutrition Education Consultant (NEC) with preparation for trainings, Webinars, workshops, and literature related to the HUSSC criteria and the application process for SFAs. Additionally, this position will review lunch and breakfast menus submitted by SFAs for adherence to the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA), conduct outreach efforts to encourage menu certification packets by the SFAs, participate on the TEAMU training team, and serve as a nutrition expert in the menu certification of SFAs as required by the HHFKA. The CNC must be willing to travel up to 20 percent.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of and experience working with SFAs and the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program
  • Strong data management, analytical, and organizational skills
  • Positive interpersonal skills and ability to interact with a wide range of people
  • Knowledge of advanced Excel, Access, and other Microsoft Office Suite programs

Individuals who have eligibility for appointment to the above class (e.g., transfer, list, reinstatement). The TEAMU will consider Child Nutrition Assistant candidates for recruitment purposes. A current Registered Dietitian Certificate from the Commission on Dietetic Registration is recommended. All applicants must clearly indicate the basis of their eligibility in the “Explanations” section on the Standard Application Form (Std 678). Employment provisions as outlined by the Department of California Human Resources State Restriction of Appointments (SROA) policy will prevail. In addition, current or future executive orders relative to filling vacant positions may also affect this process. The TEAMU may consider Child Nutrition Assistant candidates for recruitment purposes. Applications will be screened and only the most qualified will be interviewed.

Possession of minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If it is determined an applicant does not meet the minimum qualifications, the applicant will be removed from the eligibility list.
