The reporting location for this position is Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park, which includes the Chaw’se Regional Indian Museum near Pine Grove. This position will work under the direction of the Sector Superintendent. The Museum Curator II will work with unit staff to operate, protect, interpret, and maintain the park, including the collection and exhibits, to the highest quality standards. This park offers the Curator the opportunity to protect and interpret the culturally important and sensitive collection of nearly 1,400 objects, operate a museum, and oversee a 23-site campground through volunteers and seasonal staff. The Curator will supervise and coordinate staff and nearly 100 volunteers, who are essential in coordinating school groups and special events such as Big Time and sacred ceremonial events. The park has several ceremonial and interpretive structures such as a roundhouse, interpretive Miwok village, and is home to the largest collection of bedrock mortars in North America. This position may serve as the Sector’s liaison to the Park’s Association and the Native American community and will help to maintain public relation activities with the nearly 12 tribes represented at the Regional Indian Museum. The Museum Curator II may assist other units within the Sector, District, or throughout the System as directed.
