Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Supervising Registered Nurse, with general direction from licensed nursing staff, the Certified Nursing Assistant provides basic care services to RCFE residents:
Provide care and tend to the physical needs of the residents according to the resident’s service plan. This may include providing assistance with bathing, shampooing, toileting, dressing, laundry, and other activities of daily living. Inspect skin integrity when assisting with bathing. Respond to call lights in a prompt manner. Make rounds regularly to ensure accountability and safety of residents. Report unusual incidents or injury immediately to the licensed nurse. Assume role of mandated reporter in preventing elder abuse.
Assist and encourage residents in accepting and using special devices and equipment prescribed for their physical comfort or rehabilitation. Assist with and encourage resident participation in and to facility activities to improve their wellbeing. Assist residents with self-administration of medication. Responsible for central storage, documentation, observation and counting of medication.
Observe, chart, and report residents’ clinical symptoms, behavior and treatment administered to the RCFE Administrator, and other health care professionals including physicians, nursing, social work services, activities and other interdisciplinary team members as required. Sort, count, and distribute linen; clean and sterilize equipment and other articles. Prepare resident for examination by physician. Assist professional technicians before, during and after resident’s treatment program. Perform immediate and temporary interventions in emergency situations. Accompany residents to and from the Clinic and other internal destinations as needed, and to and from other medical and activity areas which may be off the grounds of the Veterans Home. Assist with admission, transfer, or discharge of patients.
Assist in serving meals, nourishments, snacks and special diets. Administer non-legend topical preparations and foot soaks to unbroken skin. Take and record blood pressure; take and record oral and rectal temperature, pulse, and respiration; take and record weight and height; measure and record the amount of intake and output of fluids. Assist in the collection of laboratory specimens. Check supply inventory stock routinely and communicate supplies needed on the unit to appropriate staff. Ensure RCFE environment is clean and safe for residents. Perform routine safety rounds. Participate in fire and disaster drills. Attend in-service trainings as scheduled by the RCFE and Training Department. Be aware of and follow facility policies and procedures, to include infection control protocols. Maintain resident right to dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
Other related duties as required.
