Job Description: JOB DESCRIPTION:
The office of a constitutional, state-wide office holder is seeking highly-skilled and self-motivated law students to become part of its team. Under the supervision of Board Member Jerome Horton’s legal staff, the student will analyze proposed decisions in state income tax appeals, prepare memoranda on state tax issues and conduct legal research. Depending on the circumstances, students may occasionally have the opportunity to attend and represent Mr. Horton at various functions and events.
Elected in 2010, Chairman Horton represents the Fourth District of the California State Board of Equalization (BOE), with more than 8.5 million residents in Los Angeles County. He is also Chair of the Board of Equalization Legislative Committee, as well as a Member of the three-member Franchise Tax Board.
The five-member board is a publicly elected tax board that collects more than $48 billion annually, which comprises approximately one-third of the state’s budget. For more information, visit www.boe.ca.gov.
• Must be a graduate student currently enrolled in a law school of recognized standing
• Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook
• Legal principles and their application, the use of legal reference works, and legal terms
• State and local government – desirable
• State and federal income tax and sales and use tax – desirable
• Reason logically; analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
• Multi-task in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment

HOURS & LOCATION:
The position is located in a high-rise building. The office is looking to fill 1 position in Monterey Park. Students must work at least 15-20 hours per week.
This is a paid internship. Salary is determined based on units completed. The salary range for Graduate Student Assistant is: $1,799 - $2,806
