The reporting location for this position is Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, with the primary focus on parks in Redwood Coast Sector (RCS), although the position may be required to work throughout North Coast Redwoods District. This position will work under the direction of the District Services Manager. The Environmental Scientist (ES) works independently to accomplish a wide range of resource management objectives within RCS and the District, working closely with North Coast Redwoods District Staff; including insuring that threatened and endangered species are adequately protected in the Sector parks, facilitating the environmental review of both internal and external projects such as PEF’s, NEPA, timber harvest plans and proposed developments on lands adjacent to the parks, conducting hazard tree safety inspections, assisting in the development of Wildfire Management Plans, overseeing and coordinating nursery staff and operations within the Sector, forest restoration, sudden oak death management, prescribed fire, exotic plant control, wildlife management, etc. Under the Departments Category H program, this position is responsible for carrying out regular inspections of the management units within each park unit. The ES prepares budget proposals, grant proposals, etc. and works with G.I.S. staff to implement the computerized G.I.S. Resource Mapping Program in the parks. This position will coordinate with National Park Service (NPS) staff on joint agency projects and NEPA reviews. The individual may act as a lead person to interns and others working on various natural and cultural Resource Management plans and projects. This position may work up to 1500 hours per year.
