Job Description:
All applicants will be considered; however, SROA/Surplus will be given priority. Under the general direction of the Assistant Chief Counsel, Appeals Division, and the Tax Counsel III (Supervisor), a Tax Counsel/Tax Counsel III (Specialist) in the Franchise and Income Tax section of the Appeals Division evaluates the issues of law and fact for appeals arising from the Franchise Tax Board and prepares proposed decisions, hearing summaries, and memoranda, and generally advises Board Member offices and their staff regarding franchise and income tax appeals on substantive and procedural matters. The Tax Counsel III (Specialist) may handle the more complex and difficult case workload. If you are not a state employee, you must be on a current list for Staff Counsel/Staff Counsel III (Specialist) ( and be reachable for this classification. Please see for more information. Travel required 5% to 10% of the time. This position utilizes the Staff Counsel and/or Staff Counsel III exam. The position is located in a high-rise building.
