Under the supervision of the Prison Canteen Manager II, the Prison Canteen Manager I has responsibility for the overall operation of the Inmate Canteens. Additional duties include purchasing, pricing of commodities, searching markets, contacting vendors and maintaining ongoing relationships, selecting and ordering merchandise for sale to inmates, warehousing, ordering and issuing Family Visiting merchandise and providing services to the inmate population. The Prison Canteen Manager I is required to maintain order and supervise the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections; prevent escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintain security of working areas and work materials; inspect premises and search inmates, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs. Persons appointed to positions in this class must be reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental, and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees or that of inmates. Assignments during tour of duty may include sole responsibility for the supervision of inmates and/or the protection of personal and real property.
