The Museum Electrician, under general direction from the Electrician Supervisor, or the Chief of Plant Operations I (Maintenance), installs, maintains, replaces and repairs the electrical, and electronic systems of the California Science Center. Works weekends, holidays and irregular hours as required. Provides responsive, high-quality customer service to Science Center employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public by providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner. Participates and displays knowledge of safety procedures and practices which include but are not limited to internal reporting of incidents, mitigating workplace hazards and applying safe work habits. Supports the mission, goals and strategic values of the Science Center. Handles the set up, operation and breakdown of the technical needs of special events. These events are managed by different state departments and by Education and Event Services; in the Science Center, CAAM and Exposition Park. Tests, repairs and maintains electronic systems that operate on low voltage. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of the breakdown and correct the problem. Repairs computers that control the various systems—both hardware and software. Systems include public address, lighting, temperature, surveillance, access control and alarm systems. Programs automated building systems through software application. As an example, may re-set the lighting control system for the parking structure or Science Center building for seasonal needs. Adjusts systems for special events such as proms, weddings, etc. This may involve running cables (heavy duty cords) for special lighting or sound systems, setting up the public address system or audio-visual system if the Audio-Visual technician is unavailable. Responds to service requests via work orders or emergencies as submitted by California Science Center staff. Installs systems including alarm systems and lays conduit for phones, computer and security system for cameras. Reviews blueprints to determine existing wiring for repairs and installation of new wiring. May install lighting when related to other tasks; changes light bulbs, ballasts and fixtures. Researches the replacement or repair of various systems such as the lighting system. Researches vendors, methods and materials, obtains bids and makes recommendations to management. Orders supplies and materials using Cal-Card. Completes accompanying paperwork. Maintains and organizes equipment and parts in drawers and shelves. Cleans tools, tests equipment for operability and tracks large and small parts. Work with other trades and departments as needed. Occasionally leads a crew of Building Maintenance Workers. Acts as lead to the Audio visual technician and other lesser skilled individuals assigned to him.

NOTE: TAU eligibility is contingent upon meeting the following Minimum Qualifications: Three years of varied experience as a journeyperson electrician, at least two years of which shall have been in exhibition or display work, including experience in electronics and special lighting effects.
