The Electrician I, under the direction and supervision of the Electrician Supervisor I installs, maintains, replaces and repairs the electrical equipment and systems of the California Science Center. Works weekends, holidays and irregular hours, as required. Provides responsive, high-quality service to State and California Science Center Foundation employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public by providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner. Participates and displays knowledge of safety procedures and practices which include but are not limited to internal reporting of incidents, mitigating workplace hazards and applying safe work habits. Tests, repairs and maintains electrical systems that operate on alternating or direct current circuits through panels, switches, meters and circuit breakers. Electrical systems include wiring, conduit (rigid, EMT, flex etc.), equipment, appliances, apparatus and fixtures. Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of the breakdown and correct the problem. May replace items such as circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sub panels & main panels, electrical components or wire. Installs repairs and maintains street lights and a variety of lighting systems which require several types of bulbs, ballasts, dimmers, connectors, lighting boards and other control systems. Installs various electrical systems including fire and security alarm systems, switchboards and other low voltage systems. Runs cable for fiber optic equipment and other systems. Connects wires to circuit breakers and other components. Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures based on job specifications. Prepares sketches or follows blueprints to determine the location of wiring, switches and other electric equipment and systems. Provides information to Electrician II on needed repair parts, tools, supplies and equipment. Provides time and cost estimates to Electrician II for in house work and for work that must be contracted out. Maintains and organizes equipment and parts in drawers and shelves. Cleans tools, tests equipment for operability and tracks large and small parts. Maintains records of repairs and installations. Works with other trades and departments as needed. Other duties as required.
