Under the direction of a Correctional Lieutenant, the Correctional Sergeant functions as an Academy Training Instructor at the Correctional Training Center (CTC) and as an investigator for the Backgrounds Investigation Unit for the Office of Peace Officer Selections. Some travel may be required. Duties include:
30% Assist with the Screening process of potential Cadets. This includes working with State and Federal law enforcement agencies, reviewing personal history statements, reviewing military records, selective service records, verifying candidate has auto insurance, employment history, relative references, Landlord contacts, working with SOMs, Central files and institutions to determine if candidate has had any inmate contact, verify citizenship, determine Legal responsibility (child support, student loans, etc.), verify education requirements, determine if candidate has had any illicit drug use, verify marriage status, and other duties as assigned to assist with the screening of new candidates.
30% Instruct classroom and field classes for the Basic Correctional Officer Academy (BCOA) in various subject matters. Monitor and rate cadet performance in a multi-instructor classroom and in field exercises. Grade BCOA in-class assignments. Monitor BCOA cadet performance and enforce BCOA rules and regulations. Conduct security checks, living quarter inspections, and provide meal coverage of BCOA cadet feeding.
15% Assist with paperwork in preparation for the BCOA cadet on-site COSIT training assignments. Transport BCOA cadets and other training participants to various locations for training purposes. Possession of a commercial (Class B) passenger endorsed license required. Obtain any training certifications the BCOA may require. Assist the Watch Sergeant in various BCOA cadet processing and documentation. Under the direction of the Program Lieutenant function as a Company Commander by providing direct supervision and guidance to BCOA cadets. Address, correct and document cadets below standard and unacceptable behaviors and performances.
10% Identify curriculum training mandates and develop the annual off-post training schedule. Coordinate with the Instructional Design Unit (IDU) staff to ensure the most current, approved lesson plans are disseminated and accurately utilized. Serve as a Subject Matter Expert to the IDU in the development of BCOA lesson plans. Assist in field with institution In-Service Training audits.
10% Function as Watch and Outside Patrol Sergeant on a rotational basis. Duties include, but are not limited to: provide control, security, and protection of all persons, property and armory within the CTC. Monitor the identification of all persons entering and exiting the facility. Monitor the daily inventory of all keys, radios, and safety equipment stored in the key control room. Monitor the daily inventory of all tools and safety equipment issued to employees and inmate work crews.
5% Deliver, manage and evaluate the course materials for the Lieutenants’ and Sergeants’ Academy training and evaluate course materials and make recommendations to the management team for improvements in the program.
