Under the direction of the Fugitive Apprehension Team Unit Supervisor, Senior Special Agent, and the Office of Correctional Safety (OCS) Administrator, the Special Agent performs a variety of duties for the Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT) associated with the investigation, location, and apprehension of Parolees, Parolees at Large (PALs), escapees and other fugitives.

Duties include but are limited to the following:

Conducts complex criminal and/or administrative investigations, independently or with the cooperation of other law enforcement agencies to locate Parolees, Parolees at Large, escapees or other fugitives primarily suspected of, or wanted for new major crimes and/or criminal activity. Conducts interviews and interrogations, surveillance and other investigative efforts, information gathering, automated and manual file searches in the furtherance of assigned investigations. Acts as a lead agent in providing guidance, direction and oversight to FAT Parole Agents conducting investigations into Parolees, Parolees at Large, escapees and other fugitives.

Makes arrests and organizes or assists in the field apprehension efforts of Parolees, Parolees at Large, escapees or other fugitives. Leads tactical operations with other Special Agents, Parole Agents, law enforcement and in multi-agency task force operations. Participates in field operations including complex criminal and administrative investigations, fugitive investigations, undercover operations, search and arrest warrant service, escape pursuit investigations, large scale tactical operations, mutual aid response, dignitary protection and other special operations. Conducts other duties as required.

Prepares comprehensive written reports and maintains records relative to investigations and arrests. Responsible for the preparation and submission of appropriate reports for administrative hearings, the Board of Prison Terms, and judicial review. Prepares other OCS reports as required. Prepares statistical reports regarding fugitive and/or criminal investigations. Makes recommendations to administrative parole authorities and prosecutorial agencies regarding disciplinary infractions and/or criminal activities discovered during investigations. Attends required training in accordance with departmental mandates. Testifies in Court or in administrative hearings.

Develops and maintains liaison with law enforcement at the local, State, and Federal level. Participates in multi-agency task force operations as directed by the OCS Administrator. Oversees the sharing of information with the appropriate law enforcement agencies regarding fugitive investigations. Provides training as needed to outside law enforcement personnel regarding OCS policies, procedures and operations. Provides investigative guidance, resources and specialized training for institutions, paroles and allied law enforcement agencies. Represents the department and provides training both within and outside the State of California.
