Under the direction of the Assistant Chief (Supervisory) (Director of Fire Training) with oversight by the Firefighter Academy (FFA) Battalion Chief (Nonsupervisory):

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • 50% *Responsible for the classroom and field instruction in rescue and structural firefighting related subject areas in the Basic Fire Control (BFC) including, but not limited to: rescue systems, ropes and knots, confined space, swift water rescue, rappelling, low-angle rescue, shoring, breeching and use of ladders in rescue, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), 24' and 35' ladders, ventilation, search & rescue, wide area search, RIC, live fire drills, vehicle extrication, forcible entry, and other basic firefighter and rescue duties relative to emergency incidents. * Research, develop, and update lesson plans, handouts and examinations for the BFC FFA courses, cadres, and field presentations.

  • 25% *Coordinate with Academy personnel regarding training and maintenance issues on the firegrounds, props and equipment necessary to perform the training in the BFC Firefighter Academy program. * Evaluate cadet performance as well as the work performed by adjuncts, cadres, TSS's and day labor personnel assigned to the battalion to assist with coordinating, supervising and directing cadets during their assignments, testing and drills. * Participate in the Academy physical training program and assist with the PT program for the cadets.

  • 10% * Use and maintain fire equipment, hose and other fire related tools, ropes, webbing, and other rescue related equipment, chainsaws, power tools, fire apparatus and heavy equipment as needed to perform maintenance, training, or respond to incidents.

  • 5% * Work with other BFC staff to ensure any disciplinary actions, illness, injuries, counseling and other issues related to BFC cadets or adjuncts assigned to the BFC are handled in a timely and professional manner.

  • 5% Receive training in job-related areas including instructional methods, fire control, supervision, and mobile equipment utilization and any topics needed to maintain readiness and qualifications to respond to emergency incidents or perform training in those subject areas. * Assist in perfoming personnel management tasks, record keeping, writing and submitting reports as required. Perform staff functions including needs assessment, issue papers, grant writing and research.

  • 5% * Respond to emergency incidents of all types in both suppression and evaluation capacities.
